It starts with a dream...

The Loons are my favorite bird. Many of you know this (and suffer through this, ha!) Last year our lake had a nest failure and I was devastated. I had to satisfy myself with monitoring the Loons on a neighboring lake. Well it looks like I have a pair of Loons attempting to nest on our lake again....

(This is a photo from a few years back, I love to look at it and dream.)

By the way, as I was watching these Loons and watched them go ashore for a brief moment. It occured to me they only go ashore for two things....to nest and to....well you know......

... and yes, I know I'm terrible!!!

Oh!!! but watching them pro-create is Beautiful and the promise of offspring.....I share your passion for Loons and have an exciting shoot coming up in June. We even decided to rent kayaks this year, hoping the lower to waterline craft may not present such a threat to them as we approach for shots.Saw only one chick 2 years ago, so keeping fingers crossed for some this year.Your shot with the chick and parent is stunning!!!! Hope to have some to share with you in June.....

The haunting cry of these beautiful birds takes me back to the days when my sons and I traveled the Boundary Water Canoe Wilderness in northeast Minnesota. Fond memories indeed. :)

Excellent Shelley... I guess they will soon be back, it is just a question of days now... I've not been seeking ours as the winter was finally pretty long. I'll do that in few weeks, thinking about you ;-)

I love Loons too. I'm in Southeast Michigan and have never seen one in person. I've just moved to a big piece of property with a huge diversity of wildlife and I'm turning into such a bird nerd! I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your site.

I have a question. I saw a vulture the other day, and I swear it didn't have the red head of a turkey vulture and it was all black, but I haven't seen anything about Black Vultures being found in Michigan. Have they made their way this far north?
