I know I've been posting dozens of Loon photos this past week, but I did see other birds on Bradford Lake. Meet the Belted Kingfisher! This was exciting for me as this was the first time I had seen this bird! Like the Loon, it also likes to dive into the water and catch fish.

Niiice! I'm still waiting to get my first (usable) shot. Good one!
Cheers, Klaus
I've always wanted to see one of those birds. Guess I better head to the water....
Nice find. I love those shots of the loon in flight. Wow. Thanks for your help on my birds. I have been looking and have not had much luck the snow goose was/is kind of what I was leaning towards but then again someone suggested they might be a domestic pekin breed. You know they remind me of some that you would see on a farm and there was a farm that was a tourist thing that just shut down last year on the other side of the lake. Anyway thanks for the help.
Nice job! Those guys are hard to get.
I love kingfishers as well. They are really quick so you got a great photo.
Wow! Great shot! The Belted Kingfisher is unique in that the females are more colorful than the males. Looks like you got a girl!
Thanks for visiting my blog!
They are amazing fishers and fun to watch. So majestic in their flight! I saw one while I was visiting CT last week and one by a river in Maine. I'm happy for you to have had this experience!
We enjoy the kingfishers at our cottage near Traverse City, MI. They have a very recognizable call, and a unique flight technique. They do go into the water, but unlike loons, which swim and dive, a kingfisher perchs up high, then crashes into the water and grabs a fish. It is very exciting. They also eat snakes, frogs, mice, etc.
Saw a Kingfisher today (8/7/09) on my commute from Lansing to Kalamazoo. I take the side roads, rather than the freeways, and it was sitting on a wire above a small pond. Beautiful crest. Very cool.
