A Loony Sunday

After my husband and our neighbor reported seeing loons on a small, no wake lake (Emerald Lake) nearby to our log cabin, I was racing out the door today with my camera bag. My friend and I paddled a canoe (well really she did most of the paddling)through every nook on the 50 acre lake until finally we saw the mating pair of Common Loons. Of course as soon as they saw us, they immediately dove underwater and swam at the speed of lightening ahead of us. Then they swam in opposite directions almost like they were trying to trick us. We circled the entire lake while I was trying to get a "few nice shots." I am just Loon crazy!

Gosh, they seem so shy, don't they? Like bird girl said, let's hope you'll see some younguns soon.

These are wonderful! You're so lucky! I've only seen females here on rare occasions.

Bird girl - I would love to see Loony babies!

Mary - they are shy. And I know they are sensitive during nesting season so I stayed away from the area where I think their babies were.

Sandpiper - I did feel lucky. I never get enough of the loons.

Jess - you said it perfectly. Every time I see one - it is "wow"! They just seem so rare and mysterious to me.

I also love loons. I used to see them on the lakes in Maine and how I love their haunting cry! Nice shots. Thanks for visiting my blog!

Kathie - I agree -their haunting cry across the lake is just the best most unique thing to hear.

Texas - thank you - this is the about the 5th time I've seen Loons and it's not enough!

Nice shots of the loons!

I can see from your post & comments that I am certainly not alone as I’m a great fan of these birds also. They passed through my area during April and early May and I already miss them.

Thanks for your nice comment on Country Captures and thanks for the linkage.
