Poking the Pine Siskin

So I'm watching these Pine Siskins on the thistle feeder and am amazed how close they are letting me get to them.

Look how close he is!

Hmmm....he looks so soft. What if I......

...reached out and touched him with one finger! Ha,ha! He flew to another branch and then came right back so I don't think I frightened him too much. Bad Shelley!

...hehehe...you made me laugh! I've been hoping siskins would visit my feeders this year, but no luck so far.

Interesting... I was just at my local nature center the other day and i was talking to this guy who was really knowledgeable about Pine Siskins. He said that it is unusual that we have so many this year. He also said that they come from way up in northern Canada and that they have never seen humans before so they really have no fear of us. He said he fills the thistle feeders at the center and most of the time they stay right on the feeder while he is filling it.

Enjoy the Siskins!

Hey I like those feeders, but... you don't have a problem with the squirrels ripping them apart?

I don't blame you for wanting to reach out and touch the Siskin...they are adorable.
We have had more this year than usual too (North Georgia).
Great photos!

You do such a great job photographing your pretty birds. You really did get close!

Wow! It let you get close enough to try and touch it? How cool is that! You must be a bird whisperer! :D Great photos, Shelley.

HAHAHA..you made me laugh. I didn't know any other birds feast at the thistle stuff than the goldfinches. I'll have to keep my glasses on to see what really is visiting here...

So funny!! Maybe just remind him you are the one who hung the thistle sock out in the first place, and a little pat in return isn't too much to ask!

Great post! We're covered up with Pine Siskins here this year (West Georgia). I've got four of those thistle socks hanging together in the backyard. They can squeeze 15 or 16 birds on each sock at a time, plus several dozen on the ground cleaning up. I can get within about 6 feet of my Siskins, but so far not close enough to touch them. I'll have to work on that. :)

I am giggling at you Bad girl my foot. Great pics. Have a stupid question for you. I love those feeders. Do you think they would work out very well in rainy areas? I have a thistle feeder with screening on it but don't seem to get many birds. HELP paleez. Just bobcats as of late. Big ones! Sharon

Kelly - I hope some come your way!

Jessica - that is real interesting! Mine were definitely unafraid of me....well until I touched one! ha,ha!

Kallen - you should have heard me laughing after I touched that little Siskin! It was a thrill to say the least!

Wendy - my squirrels don't bother them for some reason. Maybe they're busy raiding my other feeders - ha,ha!

Ms. K - I've seen more siskins this year than any other year!

Dorothy - thank you!

Daisy - can I get my own t.v. show to be a bird whisperer do you think? LOL!!

Dawn - they were very hungry and his buddies gave me a couple squawks too after I touched their friend! :)

Sandy - I think I'm turning into the crazy bird lady! :)

Deborah - my thoughts exactly!

Mark - that's great you have all those thistle feeders! I'm going to pick up some more!

Sharon - I use to take the thistle feeders down when it rains - now we use this plastic lid over it - sort of like an umbrella over the feeder to keep it dry for them.

Mildred - I am happy whenever I am close to my feathered friends!

Birdgirl - he probably ran back to his family and told them what nerve I had to disturb him while he was eating - ha,ha!

Early Birder - thank you!

Tina - I wonder if Bob would eat out of my hand....hmmm!!!!

I've come to call my flock "the cannibals" as they'll skeletonize my feeders within minutes it seems...lol! They get so busy eating, eating, eating that they hardly notice I am standing right there either. :c)

Hi Shelly,
Kit sent me and I love your Pine Siskin photos! They are declining where I come from, San Jose, CA,
though you can see them in the Santa Cruz mountains.
Funny how they let you get so close!
I have to bookmark your blog!
My husband and I are full time rvers, in search of birding places.
Now we have to put Michigan and Georgia on the map for more places!!
We write a travel journal, my husband does the writing and I do the photography, in a blog called:
birdingrvers.com
Happy birding and photography!
Kathy

We are having a bunch of these at our place, too! They love the finch sock, and they do seem fairly tame.

I was taking care of some friends birdfeeders last week and their pine siskins were the same way. Such fearless little birds!

You touched him? Really? I just put my thistle feeder back out last night. It's been so cold here they had no interest, at least not as far as I could see.

Enjoy your Siskins! I have yet to see them at my feeders, only Goldfinches.
