She wore a raspberry beret...

Deborah at Notes from the Cloud Messenger made a comment on my Redpoll photo yesterday at my other blog and noted that the Redpoll has a beret. I just loved that description. Reminds me of that Prince song.... (do you remember the lyrics .....?)

P.S. Does anyone want to join Dave (from Dave's Birdwatching Blog) and I on our bird handfeeding challenge this summer? Here is Dave's funny comment in reference to my handfeeding the Siskins & Redpolls yesterday in case you missed it :

"Not so fast, Shellmo! Siskins don't count...that's like feeding house sparrows a French fry outside of McDonald's. That being said, I must say, a redpoll in hand with snow in the background...yikes! That may even trump a beautiful bluebird. Consider the challenge accepted, but no points for lame birds. I see our score at 4 to 3-1/2 right now (titmouse, chickadee and redpoll, plus snowy redpoll half point bonus for you...chickadee, bluebird, c wren, and bh nuthatch for me). Game on! :-)"

Personal note to Dave - GAME ON!!!

...I remember that song from grad school in 1985!
I'd like to try hand feeding a chickadee or a hummingbird. You two are amazing!

That's a beautiful beret Shelley!

My wife is the hand feeder here. Maybe I can get her into this challenge.

You guys are WAY out of my league...I am lucky if I can coax them to my deck, much less my HAND.
The only way I get them close is when they hit my window and we go out and coax them back to health. (I will be posting pictures of that on my blog over the next few days, along with some photos)...
But the other exciting thing is that a piliated Woodpecker flew to a tree VERY close to our house yesterday! I ran to get the camera and he was gone by the time I got back. DANG it!

I think I'll just watch you and Dave duke it out! I'm loving it. Just remember he's got that adorable son to throw in as a ringer! Not sure Marvin can compete.

Love the raspberry beret! Very stylish :-) I think my arm would fall off before any of my birds ever came to eat out of my hand. Will be watching your challenge.

Great photo of the Redpoll. They're such a cute and pert little birdy.

Well, muscially I'm kind of stuck in the 60s, so I had to google the song. Out west I used to hand feed chickadees, but not sure I could hand-tame the birds I could with who I have around here now, and the redpolls and siskins have moved on. But if I had a raspberry beret, I'd wear it! Especially if it was Dress Like Your Favorite Bird Day. (I just made that up, but we could start one...)

Oh - the Game is on!! Can't wait to see where this goes. I would demand that all hand feedings be accompanied by a photograph of it! No cheating.. haha Yes, a red beret for sure on that Redpoll.

Great GAME, Shelley. Both you and Dave do a GREAT job getting those birdies to eat out of your hands. Don't know when that will ever happen here... Someday maybe!!!!!

That Redpoll does have a beret.. Cute terminology from Deb....

Hugs,
Betsy

Shelley..my friend who is a wildlife rehabber advised me not to do it as the birds might assume that someone else would have food and get hurt because of it because I really wanted to try it as it is very cool. I don't even feed the ducks or geese here for the same reason. I just leave a boot tray with cracked corn and walk away. But it really is so very awesome to have a bird trust you that much..I am really thinking of taking the classes to become a rehabber if my health would hold up...Michelle

The challenge sounds great! I can only wish to get it on that!
The only part of a bird that I have EVER had on my hand is poop! SPLAT...when I was filling the feeder a few months ago. Many thanks that darling little chickadee by the way.......
