The Cardinal Bird

A day and then a week passed by:
The redbird hanging from the sill
Sang not: and all were wondering why
It was so still-
When one bright morning, loud and clear,
Its whistle smote my drowsy ear,
Ten times repeated, til the sound
Filled every echoing niche around;
And all things earliest loved by me,
The bird, the brook, the flower, the tree,
Came back again, as thus I heard
The cardinal bird.

Oh I love Cardinals! They are one of my favorites! I have cardinals that come to my feeders all the time. Did you know they mate for life? Kind of gives you respect for them.
Beautiful bird, beautiful picture!

Wendy - me too - I used to have an older couple for the past 3 years but don't see them anymore. Thank you!

Darla - thank you for visiting and your nice comments!

Nick - I was so happy to see the cardinal yesterday (after millions of mourning doves and 3 noisy blue jays) that i thought he deserved his own poem as a tribute.

Great! He's a little molty, but he doesn't know it - all he knows is that he's very beautiful.

Lovely shot and poem. We don't have a lot of cardinals since they prefer our neighbor's platform feeders. But they drop by occasionally and they are indeed beautiful.

He looks like he is or has been molting just a little. Either way he doesn't look as bad as they do around here right now. Love that red.

KJ - it was nice to see "red" after so much blue and pink!

Birdlady - yes! I think they carry themselves like they know how handsome they are.

Jaylynn - thank you - glad you liked the poem too!

NC - it seems like I get the most cardinals in the winter.

Leedra - yes, definitely molting!

I love cardinals! Every morning they are there to greet me with their chirping. I have one pair that must have nested near by because they have been around all summer and even brought their babies around too. I hope I get more in the winter when they are less territorial.
